Automated Framing Solutions for Solar PV Production Lines
Release time:2025-12-10
The framing machine is a core piece of equipment in the photovoltaic (PV) module encapsulation process. Its function is to assemble the laminated and cured, edge-trimmed PV panel cores (glass-EVA-cell-EVA-backsheet) with an aluminum frame into a robust, sealed, and installable complete PV module.it completes the transformation of the module from "a single panel" to "a finished product."

Core Functions and Value
1. Providing Structural Strength and Rigidity
•Resisting Mechanical Loads: The aluminum frame provides robust frame protection for the brittle glass laminate, enabling it to withstand wind pressure, snow pressure, installation stress, and vibration and impact during transportation, ensuring the module remains undeformed and unbroken during over 25 years of outdoor use.
•Easy Installation: The mounting holes and slots on the frame allow for convenient and secure installation of the module on various bracket systems.
2. Forming a Sealing Barrier
•Preventing Edge Erosion: Sealing silicone is injected into the grooves between the frame and the core (a key step in the framing machine), forming a permanent, elastic sealing layer.
•Blocking Moisture and Dust: Effectively prevents external moisture, rain, corrosive gases, and dust from penetrating the module from the edges, protecting the cells and circuitry and avoiding PID (Potential Induced Degradation), corrosion, and short circuits. This is the lifeline for ensuring the long-term reliability of the module.
3. Achieving the Final Product Appearance
•Aesthetics and Standardization: Frame assembly gives the module a neat, uniform, and professional appearance, meeting the aesthetic requirements of industrial products.
•Grounding and Safety: The frame typically serves as the module's grounding component, part of the electrical safety system.
•Frame Assembly Machine Workflow (Fully Automatic)-A fully automatic framing machine typically operates in the following sequence: Frame Loading and Pre-positioning: Four pre-cut aluminum frames with pre-drilled mounting holes (usually anodized or spray-painted) are automatically conveyed to the designated position on the machine.
Sealing silicone is pre-injected into the grooves of the frame (some models inject silicone after frame assembly).
•Component Core Loading and Positioning: Precisely transport the trimmed laminated components (cores) to the frame assembly station.
Four-Corner Connection (Critical Step)-Corner-Abutting Type:Using a high-precision hydraulic or servo mechanism, the four frame members are precisely aligned at 45-degree angles at the four corners, using the serrated structure inside the corner brackets (usually made of stainless steel or aluminum alloy) to interlock and lock. This is currently the most mainstream and strongest connection method.
•Corner-Plug Type:The four corners of the component are directly inserted into pre-formed corner brackets and then locked with screws (less commonly used).
•Locking and Reinforcement:After corner-attaching, locking screws may be automatically driven into the corners, or secondary tightening may be performed to ensure the four-corner connection is absolutely secure.
•Seal Injection (If Not Pre-Injected):Silicone is injected evenly and continuously along the entire circumference into the grooves of the assembled frame.
•Pre-Curing Finishing:The frame seams and sealant injection are automatically smoothed or finished to ensure an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
The assembled components are output and fed into a curing oven to fully cure the silicone at a constant temperature, achieving its final strength. Types and Trends of Framing Machines:
•Fully Automatic Framing Machine: Integrates all the above steps, boasting a high degree of automation, fast cycle time, and good consistency, making it the preferred choice for mainstream large component manufacturers.
•Semi-Automatic Framing Machine: Some steps (such as frame feeding and glue application) are completed manually; the machine handles critical corner locking, resulting in lower investment costs and suitability for flexible production.
Technological Trends:
•Compatibility with Large Sizes and Thin Frames: Adapts to large-size components such as 182,210, as well as thin frames designed for cost reduction.
•Laser Positioning and Visual Inspection: Improves docking accuracy and performs automatic dimensional inspection and sealant continuity inspection on assembled components.
•Frameless Technology: Although not within the scope of framing machines, it competes with this technology. Certain special applications (such as BIPV) are adopting frameless designs, posing new challenges to the traditional framing process.
In summary, the framing machine is the final core process equipment that gives photovoltaic modules their "skeleton" and "armor." It directly determines the product's mechanical strength, sealing life, and appearance quality, and is a key manufacturing link that ensures photovoltaic modules can serve stably for decades.
