Lithium Battery Welding Machines: The "Core of Connectivity" in the TWh Era
Release time:2026-08-08
If a lithium battery is an energy vessel, then welding is the critical "stitching" process that safely and efficiently assembles these vessels into reliable power sources. As power batteries fully enter the TWh era, lithium battery welding machines have evolved from simple tools into core equipment that determines battery safety, consistency, and production efficiency. In 2025, the global market for lithium battery welding machines reached $735 million, projected to grow to $1.157 billion by 2032, representing a compound annual growth rate of 7.2%.
Welding: The "Invisible Critical Point" in Battery Manufacturing
Lithium battery welding machines are specialized connection systems for manufacturing lithium-ion battery cells, modules, and packs, handling virtually all internal electrical connection points. These include joining tabs to electrode sheets, welding current collectors to terminals, sealing battery casings and electrolyte fill ports, and connecting busbars between modules.
A single power battery pack contains hundreds or even thousands of weld points, and the quality of each directly impacts internal resistance, heat generation, safety, and cycle life. Defects such as cold welds, missed welds, or insufficient weld strength can lead to degraded performance or, in severe cases, trigger critical safety issues like thermal runaway. Consequently, high-quality welding is a prerequisite for ensuring battery safety and achieving stable, mass-scale production.

Two Dominant Technological Approaches: Laser and Ultrasonic Welding
The current market for lithium battery welding equipment is defined by two mainstream technological approaches—laser welding and ultrasonic welding—which complement each other while serving distinct applications.
Laser welding is rapidly gaining adoption on power battery production lines thanks to advantages such as high speed, high precision, non-contact processing, and a minimal heat-affected zone. It is particularly well-suited for battery casing sealing, top cover welding, busbar connection, and module assembly. Taking full-tab welding for cylindrical batteries as an example, laser welding can achieve speeds of up to 200 mm/s and a pass rate exceeding 99.9%. For aluminum alloy battery casing welding, advanced laser equipment can limit deformation to within 1 mm, achieving a mass-production yield of over 99%.
Ultrasonic welding, meanwhile, utilizes high-frequency vibration to fuse metal molecular layers. Characterized by a unique "cold welding" process that does not melt the base material, it is particularly well-suited for joining multi-layer tabs—such as copper or aluminum foils, stacking up to 120 layers. It overcomes the thermal damage issues associated with laser welding when handling highly reflective or thin materials, offering extremely low welding resistance and high speeds, making it the preferred solution for joining multi-layer tabs to connectors.

From Standalone Units to Integrated Lines: The Industrial Upgrade of Smart Welding
As battery manufacturers demand higher efficiency and quality, lithium battery welding equipment is evolving from standalone units toward fully integrated, intelligent production lines. Modern welding systems now seamlessly incorporate automated feeding, visual positioning, robotic handling, AI-based real-time quality monitoring, and MES data traceability. Leading equipment providers offer assembly and inspection lines that integrate welding, assembly, and testing, achieving line-wide first-pass yields exceeding 97%.
Accelerated Industry Chain Development
While key upstream components for lithium battery welding machines—such as high-performance lasers, ultrasonic transducers, and motion control systems—remain dominated by select international companies, Chinese enterprises are rising rapidly, bolstered by a robust new energy industry chain and continuous technological innovation. Domestic equipment manufacturers have successfully integrated into the supply chains of leading battery companies both at home and abroad.
Only when the hundreds of weld points in a battery pack are precisely calculated and securely connected can the "heart" of an electric vehicle truly beat with strength and vitality. In this industrial race shaping the future of energy, lithium battery welding machines are emerging as a pivotal force driving the energy transition, thanks to their indispensable role in ensuring reliable connections.
